@poppiesfishandchips, an icon of the East End, is a traditional chippy serving their unbeatable fish & chips and also traditional sides like whitebait, mushy peas, and jellied eels. The shop is small and can only accomodate a few guests, so if you`re lucky enough to dine inside you`ll be treated to 50s and 60s oldies and a fine collection of British memorabilia. As a result, I had "Stupid Cupid" stuck in my head for days after eating there.
I actually went there twice: I had supper there and enjoyed the full experience including the malt vinegar and the tartar sauce in the cute little glass jar. The second time I came with @secretfoodtours during their East End food tour, where I had this adorable sample-sized serving in a pocket of newspaper.
The East End of London (Whitechapel, Brick Lane, Spitalfields) is where I started my trip, and I stayed 2 days there. One of the iconic food spots on Brick Lane is @beigel_bake which I got to try with a fantastic East End food tour from @secretfoodtours.
The famous salt beef bagel is MASSIVE and delicious and more tender than it looks. The bagel is a little softer and fluffier than a NY bagel, and the sandwich is topped with a dill pickle slice and a hefty dollop of strong English mustard.
Not a bad view for breakfast! 🍳
