Carne Asada in the Oaxacan Countryside

The third day of my epic Oaxaca Getaway with Club Tengo Hambre was filled with mezcal. But in addition to that, the day was bookended with two incredible foodie experiences. We headed out into the countryside of the Valles Centrales to experience two places that most tourists don’t make it to.

El Baratillo, the Livestock Market

We started out at El Baratillo, the Friday livestock market in San Antonino Castillo Velasco. This is the largest such market in the southeast of Mexico. In addition to cattle, horses, goats, and sheep, you can also find a flea market of sorts with used cars, food, and secondhand clothing (much of it comes from Kansas City, which is so funny). Walking around Oaxaca, you will see a curious number of Chiefs fans and our guide explained that this is why.

After walking around to see all the cows and horses up for auction, we stopped into the food area called Barbacoas San Antonino. The whole space is filled with smoke from all the grills searing meat.

Our breakfast was incredible!! After being offered a little mezcalita (you are always offered mezcal everywhere you go in Oaxaca!), we had this amazing platter of meats and tortillas. And beer!

With full stomachs, we headed out for a day of mezcal! We visited two family-run palenques in the Valles Centrales.

Eating and Exploring in New England & Beyond

I heard that I'm going to get to make some charcuterie boards and platters this coming week. Exciting! I was hired as a cheesemonger although my role has ended up just being a cashier, so I don't get to do it much. It will be really nice to do some of the work I applied to do!
Our wonderful staff make food, we shoot food, sell food..... all day, every day. I definitely have the easy part in all of this.
Every day the amazing staff is creating gorgeous food and we are creating art with the photos. ✨
