Grilled Cheese Heaven at Cheddar and Rye

Cheddar and Rye is a newer downtown Manchester NH bar and restaurant with an interesting concept. On the “Cheddar” half, they specialize in magnificent gooey grilled cheese sandwiches. On the “Rye” side, they are New Hampshire’s biggest whiskey bar with over 250 varieties of whiskey! As I recently visited Scotland earlier this year (and the Glenfiddich distillery!), I very much appreciate this bit of “wee dram” goodness here in New Hampshire.

This drool-worthy stack of grilled cheese is a sampling of four of their offerings, one for each member of my family. From top to bottom they are: Venom, Michelangelo, The Hulk, and the Lex Luthor. This comic book theme came from when their space next door was decorated with superheroes.

As you can see, they are gooey and melted to perfection, and loaded with meats. They offer a few different types of bread options, but we went with white bread for our grilled cheeses because we are not savages. My husband and I shared the Hulk (muenster, turkey, bacon, sundried tomato mayo) and the Lex Luthor (cheddar, pulled pork, crispy onions, BBQ sauce) and in our mutual option the Hulk reigned supreme just because of that amazing bacon. But we enjoyed them both immensely. I also had a small morsel of my son’s Venom (sloppy joe, American) because he was not sharing, but it was delicious.

For the grilled cheese aficionados, this bar is a wonderful addition to Manchester. With each sandwich costing between $6-$8.50 it makes a great lunch, and you can even call in a takeout order. With my kids with me at noon on a Friday I didn’t have a chance to sample the whisky, but I would love to go back and do a flight sometime.
